A Coconut Creek woman recently drowned after leaving the Coral Springs Medical Center, police say.
Leodore Campbell of Coconut Creek was recently discovered in a lake near the Banyan Point apartments, according to Tony Avello, spokesman for the Coconut Creek Police Department.

Prior, Coral Springs police discovered her wandering around the city appearing “confused and dehydrated,” Avello said. She was then transported to the Coral Springs Medical Center.

“We were told that she was there for a couple days and then suddenly left,” Avello said.
After leaving the local hospital, Campbell was reported missing and later discovered in a Coconut Creek lake where she had drowned.
“We believe that she continued to wander about the area after she left the hospital and then made a long walk from Coral Springs to the lake where she was discovered,” said Avello. “Our investigation is closed. We have ruled the incident an accidental drowning.”

As for Campbell’s condition, Coral Springs Medical Center officials say they cannot disclose her records due to patient confidentiality.
“Hospitals and medical providers are prohibited by law (Patient Privacy Laws -- HIPAA) in discussing patients and their care without the consent of the patient or next of kin,” said Patrick Maloney, CEO of Coral Springs Medical Center in a statement sent to the Our Town News.
Campbell’s family claims the hospital is at fault.

But Maloney added, “We take all patient care issues seriously. We are conducting a thorough review of the circumstances involved. We are our community’s trusted caregiver. Our goal is to provide the highest standard of care to our community. It is our responsibility and commitment to exceed that standard.”

“We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Ms. Campbell’s family during this difficult time,” he said. “Our thoughts are with them.”
