“It’s hot there. It can reach up to 120 degrees, and scorpions hide in our pillows,” Hector Roman told a group of wide-eyed kids.
Roman, who serves in the US Navy in Iraq, recently visited Coral Springs Middle School to inform students about his experiences.
“I wanted to show them that everything in Iraq is not as bad as it seems. It’s a beautiful place, and it’s not just killing and war. We are rebuilding schools,” he said.
The soldier, who has a son in eighth-grade at the school, also wanted to thank students for sending care packages. The entire school collected goods for Roman and other soldiers.
“We collected socks, toiletries and other things they don’t have in Iraq,” said Roman’s 13-year-old son, Aaron Roman. “I’m very proud of my dad. He did his job for this country.”
Coral Springs Middle Principal Ian Murray said he hopes the students gained much from the speaker.
“I want them to get a feeling for war, realities, and that people are defending our country and serving to protect our freedom,” he said.
Roman added, “It’s important for children to see another side of Iraq.”
