Some Coral Springs and Parkland residents are shooting for the Gold.
Many went to the 2008 Olympic trials this past week in Omaha, Nebraska, in hopes of qualifying for the Olympic Games, which will begin August 8 in Beijing.
Coral Springs resident Adler Volmar has qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic judo team.
“It’s wonderful to have someone in our city going to Beijing and representing Coral Springs,” said City Commissioner Ted Mena.
Another local favorite is Dara Torres, a 41-year-old swimmer from Parkland, who was vying for her fifth Olympic Games. Torres hoped to qualify for the 2008 Olympics for the U.S. Women’s Swim Team for the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle. Results for Torres were not available at press time.
Torres trained daily at the Coral Springs Aquatic Center with the Coral Springs Swim Club in preparation for the trials.
“At a meet for the World Masters, someone said it would be great to see a 40-year-old swim in the Olympics, and that really got me going,” Torres said.
“We hope Dara Torres makes it. She is an incredible resident of the community and quite a leader,” said Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook, before the results.
Volmar will host Going for the Gold party July 12 at 8 p.m. at La Quinta Inn, 3701 University Drive, Coral Springs. All proceeds will go to Adler Volmar in sponsorship for the Olympic Games. Call 954-647-8899.
As of press time, the results for the 2008 Olympic trials were not available. A follow-up article on all the local residents who will compete in the Olympic Games will appear in the Our Town Newsand at www.theourtownnews.com
