A Coconut Creek post office may soon be dedicated to a local fallen soldier.
U.S. Representative Ron Klein (FL-22) has introduced legislation calling for the post office at 4233 West Hillsboro Blvd. in Coconut Creek to honor the name of Army Specialist Daniel Agami, who passed away at 25 years old. A bomb ripped through his Bradley Tank, killing him and four other soldiers in the vehicle, while serving in Baghdad June 21, 2007.
Klein’s legislation is co-sponsored by all 25 members of the Florida Congressional delegation. If Congress approves the legislation in the coming months, the post office will still be named the Coconut Creek Post Office but will be dedicated to Agami, and his name will appear on a plaque at the post office. His family lives in Parkland, but the city does not have a postal branch.
“Specialist Agami served his country with great distinction, and by naming a public building in his honor, we will ensure that his memory never fades from our community," Klein said.
The city of Parkland also wants to honor Agami. The Parkland City Commission recently passed a resolution urging the United States Postal Service to locate a post office or a post office type facility, kiosk, in Parkland. With the population growth over recent years, there is a need for a postal facility within the city, officials say. Should one be located in Parkland, the City Commission supports that it be named after Agami.
“In the event there is not going to be a post office in Parkland, we support the family and Congressman Klein’s office in naming the closest post office after PFC Agami,” said Parkland Mayor Michael Udine. “I think the family has paid the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of our country. As a member of the governing body of the city, we are extremely touched to recognize this sacrifice.”
Agami’s mother Beth says she is grateful that the leaders would honor her son.
“Our family is deeply grateful to Congressman Ron Klein and staff for keeping Daniel’s memory alive. This is an honorable tribute in memory of our son, and to publicly remind our surrounding communities of one of our nation’s heroes, SPC Daniel Jay Agami,” said Beth Agami. “We are so appreciative to the city of Parkland. A tree was planted in front of city hall in his memory and his picture is hanging in the Parkland library. The memorials and tributes will always remind us of Daniel’s sacrifice, and we thank everyone who has shown us kindness, compassion and concern for our family in this past difficult year.”
