Crayons and pencils are a rarity and luxury for some children in Jamaica.
The Living Water Community Church in Fort Lauderdale wants to help those children in Jamaica who are in need of school supplies.
The church is seeking: crayons (16 count), markers (8 count), glue sticks, pencils, pens, erasers, pencil sharpeners and gallon size Zip bags. Church members will deliver these supplies to the children on their upcoming mission trip to Jamaica. This will be the second mission trip to St. James Parish from July 27 to August 2. About 35 members will help conduct various children’s programs and then hand out school supplies.
“The areas we are going to are extremely needy. The kids look forward to receiving, even small items like crayons and wrapped candies. They don’t have much,” said Deborah Thompson, Executive Director of the church.
Thompson hopes families participate and make it a “family project.”
“I urge families to do this as a summer family project. They can go out with their kids, shop for items. Projects like this let the kids know that it’s fun to be generous,” she said. “We throw away crayons and glue, but to the children in Jamaica these items are greatly valued.”
All donations can be dropped off to the Our Town News office at 11874 Wiles Road, Coral Springs, 33076. The deadline is July 18.
