City Commission Approves Adding Additional Canine Unit

The Coral Springs Police Department will soon have a new officer on the force- and he’s man’s best friend.
The Coral Springs City Commission recently approved the withdrawal of $10,875.70 in law enforcement trust funds for various purchases. Among those are: $7,500 for the purchase of an additional canine partner for the K-9 Unit. The Unit currently has four dogs, and this purchase will add one more to the Unit. The added K-9 Officer will work daytime hours on a permanent basis. The handler will respond immediately to in-progress and priority calls made during the daytime hours, according to city reports. There is currently a delay in a K-9 response because a handler must be called out. City reports further show that additional monies will be saved as less overtime is paid out, because the need to summon a handler during daytime hours will no longer exist.

“We will have five canines total. Right now we are in the process of posting a position for a new police officer and once we have hired that officer, we will then purchase a canine. It should be in the next four weeks,” said Coral Springs Police Chief Duncan Foster. “Canine units are instrumental in tracking suspects. They are quicker getting to the scene.”

In addition to a canine unit, other purchases include: $2,918 for the annual continuation fee for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) Communication Center Accreditation for the second term of accreditation. The Communications Unit was accredited in November 2007 for a three-year period and will be going through re-accreditation onsite in August 2010, reports show. The final purchase is $457 for reimbursement to the City Clerk’s Office account for expenses incurred in placing ads from May 5 to May 14, reports show.
