A Coral Springs teacher, who was recently arrested for alleged sexual relations with a former student, has been released on $25,000 bond, according to police.
Christine Jouini, 38, was arrested June 6 on the alleged charges of three counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, according to Detective Chip Kolenda, spokesman for the Margate Police Department.
“She was made aware of the arrest. She then retained an attorney and turned herself in,” said Kolenda.
Jouini is employed at The Center Academy, a private school in Coral Springs, where she teaches grades 11 and 12, police reports show. The male victim, who was 16 years old at the time, was one of Jouini’s students at the school, Kolenda says.
Jouini’s attorney Michael Orenstein says his client is “not guilty.”
“She will be proven not guilty,” said Orenstein. “Her life has been upended due to this. The truth will come out in the end.”
Margate Police detectives began the investigation after the victim recently confided to another teacher that he had previously had a sexual relationship with Jouini, according to police reports. That teacher, in compliance with child abuse reporting guidelines, notified the State of Florida child abuse hotline of the allegation.
In police reports, the victim stated that the relationship began in August 2006 and lasted until September, 2007. The victim was 16 years old when the relationship began. In police reports, the victim said that during that time, he had intercourse with Jouini on multiple occasions, off campus and at her residence in Margate. During the course of the investigation, detectives located several witnesses who observed the student and teacher together, away from school, and also at the teacher’s residence. Additional information was also supplied by the victim that led to detectives obtaining a warrant for Jouini’s arrest.
